With flip flop season in full swing, how do you know that your flip flops are not going to cause you pain?

Check out this article from Sole!

"New research has shown that flimsy flip-flops, generally associated with inexpensive pairs, can actually pose serious health risks. Wearing flat, thin-soled flip-flops increases the risk of foot problems due to their lack of proper support and cushioning.

The complete lack of support in standard flip-flops means the wearer has to work a lot harder to keep them on. This, in turn, aggravates any existing biomechanic problems. These problems are especially prevalent in people who wear flip-flops for extended periods of time.

Now that the weather's finally improving, everyone is heading outside. This is the time to lace up your runners' and go for a walk or run.

However, the thought of finding an athletic shoe that works with your orthotics can seem a bit daunting at first. There are some key things to keep in mind when it comes to finding supportive athletic footwear. First off, it's a good idea to get familiar with some terminology. Words like neutral cushioned, motion control, and stability are the prime place to start!

NEUTRAL CUSHIONED

If you have orthotics you want to look into getting a neutral cushioned shoe. These types of shoes have actually been designed to have less arch support buildup in order to allow for an arch support to be added.

MOTION CONTROL

These athletic shoes have more arch support built into them. As a rule, these are generally not considered to be the optimal type of shoe to accommodate an orthotic. This is because you already have arch support in the shoe, so adding an orthotic might actually increase the arch support to far.

STABILITY

These shoes are designed to be exceptionally stable (as the name would suggest). Often the base is flared out slightly so that it is wider on the bottom than on the top. In New Balance shoes, they often insert a Rollbar in the base to ensure that there is even more stability when you land on your heel. These shoes are great for comfort, cushioning, orthotics, and, of course, stability.

We carry a ton of styles, most of which are specifically designed to accommodate orthotics and off-the-shelf arch supports. Our main two athletic brands are New Balance and Etonic.

This summer, Strides is excited to introduce a new line to our collection. We've brought in two summer styles by the brand Kumfs. Kumfs, originating from New Zealand, keeps styles in mind with its summer sandals, but never forgets comfort.

Both sandals feature insoles with gel heels, arch support, and metatarsal support. On top of that, these insoles are removable and able to accommodate half orthotics.

We're all fans of this style. The versatile pewter tone goes with everything and the sandals can be dressed up or down. These sandals are made for walking and their full backs add increased comfort and stability. Coming soon in black!

A softer take on the gladiator sandal, this bone coloured shoe will walk miles with you. Supple all-leather uppers are fully adjustable to fit your foot comfortably.

Here at Strides we pride ourselves at having a multitude of footwear designed to accommodate a variety of foot shapes and requirements.

For some of the more serious foot issues, we have a selection of post-operative healing slippers. The Pedors slippers are capable of being worn outside. They are available in a range of widths and sizes, have a removable footbed and stretchable uppers able to accommodate swelling. As well, washing is easy. Just put them in the bag they come with and throw them into the washing machine.

For even more adaptability, the Techno slipper opens fully in the front and attaches with Velcro. Also, the heel is adjustable with a Velcro strap.

Okay, so we are really loving the snakeskin this year. But let's be honest, it's impossible not to!

The black and silver on this Dromedaris sandal make it super versatile - it can be dressed up or down. The heel gives you height without any of the tears so you can dance all night long!

Rock and Roll All Year Round

Rocker-soled shoes are being seen everywhere this season and it’s not just a passing fad!

There are many reasons to try a rocker sole. The magic starts as the shoe mimics the feel of walking on soft surfaces (like a sandy beach) barefoot by using the natural rolling action of your gait. This reduces impact to your feet, legs, back, knees, hips… – and the list goes on! Don’t forget, it’s all connected. Rocker-soles enhance the natural momentum of your body to propel you through every step that you take.

The big draw of a rocker sole is that it can reduce foot fatigue and inflammatory pain caused by arthritis. This is because the shape of a rocker reduces leveraging of your forefoot. It allows your foot to remain stable within the shoe while the shoe does the work for you. This is also fantastically helpful in healing processes for a number of foot injuries where the foot still needs to be stable.

Shoes like the MBTs and Mephisto Sanos all create a slightly unstable platform which increases the demand for muscle tension which gives your muscles a better workout. It’s sort of like using an exercise ball. The unstable platform also increases circulation. The rocker sole pretty much does everything but serve you food in bed!

BONUS FEATURE: Many rocker soled shoes have thicker bases to provide the rigid structure necessary for the rocker effect. On the plus side, that also gives you extra height without having to stand on your toes!
